Letter from Matthew
Elliott to Colonel
William Claus

The following letter comments on the effect Hull's proclamation had on
the militia.

Wednesday, July 15, 1812
Amherstburg

The American proclamation has operated very powerfully on our Militia.
Since it was issued our Militia have left their Posts and returned to their
homes, so that since Sunday [the day of the invasion] the number is
reduced to about one half, and I expect that in two or three days more
we shall have very few of them at the post. [Fort Malden]

We expect to be attacked [at Fort Malden] today or tomorrow. The
Indians with us number between 300 and 400 who have resisted every
allurement which General Hull laid before them. Tecumseh has kept them
faithful — he has shown himself to be a determined character and a
great friend to our Government.

P.S. The people here are much dejected and have removed all their
effects out of the place.
