HELP KEEP THIS WEBSITE ONLINE

Yup. I hate to beg. Really. But any donation is
greatly appreciated. It costs about $25 Cdn per month
to keep this website online. There are a number of
ways you can help keep this site online.

1. Click on the ads. See an ad you're interested in? Then click on it.
Each click generates a couple of cents of revenue. Please only click on
ads that actually interest you - otherwise it's not fair to the advertiser.

2. Visit
GeneralBrock.com before you make a purchase on
Amazon.ca or visit the
online bookstore to make any purchases. A
small percentage of each sale goes towards keeping this unique
Canadian history website online.

3. Donate. Click on the Paypal link to steer some funds towards this
website or make a donation on your VISA/MasterCard.

Anything you can do is greatly appreciated.
GENERALBROCK.COM WAS launched
in May 2003 for two primary reasons:

1. It was a decent way to teach myself
HTML; and

2. It seemed like a good idea.

The first part I'm still working on, and
the site will undoubtedly go through a
number of major revisions during its
time on the World Wide Web. I've
started tinkering around with Yahoo's
PageBuilder software and Adobe
GoLive to make the site a bit better..

Here are some answers to frequently
asked questions about the site:

Why did you put this up?

Simple question to answer. I love
Canadian history, particularly the War
of 1812 and specifically Brock. Brock is
the penultimate "Canadian" history
figure, one of the country's first heroes
and the way in which he died is the
stuff of legends.

And, like any historical hero, there are many legends surrounding Brock.
So it seemed like a good idea to set up a Web site to honour the guy
that kept us from being overrun by the U.S. (Nothing against our
American friends to the south, but Canada is a pretty special place and
wouldn't be nearly so if it was completely swallowed up by the southern
menace.)

When did you first get interested in Brock?

That would be around Grade 4 or so. In the early 1980s, there was a
great show on TV Ontario called Read All About It. (Great being a relative
term... it seemed great to a 10-year-old kid at the time.)

The show featured three kids, a typewriter and a computer screen. The
typewriter and the screen couldn't talk, but would type out and display
their messages. (I guess this was the way TV Ontario justified the show
from an educational point-of-view.)

But, nevertheless, in one of the episodes the cast travelled back in time
and ended up in Upper Canada in the fall of 1812, shortly before Brock
died. They couldn't save him in time, but it really sparked a fascination of
history in me.

Information on the television show "Read all about it" can be tough to
find, but www.berkana.net/rick/html/tvohome/read.html is pretty good.

Is this a commercial site?

Absolutely not. The site is purely informational. However, I have
registered with Google's Adsense program to help defray the costs of
hosting this site and also with Amazon.ca so visitors can order books on
Brock and the War of 1812 directly through the site. (Plus, any orders
filled through this site generates a small amount of credit at Amazon,
which helps me purchase additional materials on the War of 1812.

So, if you shop at Amazon.ca, please come to this site first, click on one
of the ads and then continue shopping.

Of course, neither of these revenue streams really produces much
money and the site still costs me far more than any revenue it
generates. But every little bit helps, and I appreciate the support.

Submissions

I love to get submissions, be they articles, photographs, multimedia —
anything that relates to the War of 1812 or General Brock are extremely
welcome.

I'll give full credit to the person who sent them in (assuming they want
the credit.) It would be great to get some photographs and stories from
re-enactors. So, if you're a re-enactor or have some great photographs
or stories to tell, drop an e-mail to webmaster@generalbrock.com.
